Mountaineering in Nepal

Tourism in Nepal began with mountaineering. Eight of the world’s 14 tallest mountains including Everest lie in Nepal while hundreds of other smaller peaks crown the country’s north. The Eight Thousanders may have been scaled many times over, but they continue to be a big draw year after year.

The mountains are open for climbing during all the four seasons – Spring (March-May), Summer (June-August), Autumn (September-November) and Winter (December-February). The ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) handles all the permits for the bigger mountains while the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) issues the permits for the smaller trekking peaks, rising in altitude from 5587 to 6654 m. Out of the 326 peaks open for climbing, expeditions to 121 peaks don’t require liaison officers.

Anyone who is 16 years of age can apply for the climbing permit. An application addressed to the Mountaineering Division, MoCTCA for a permit should include the following completed biographies of the expedition members (with photographs and signature), map and/or photographs of the mountain showing climbing route and approach route. Climbing fees are paid in full only after the permit is issued.

The NMA issues permits to expedition to the trekking peaks based on “first come first served” basis. A government recognized trekking agency must be appointed to handle all the requirements during the expedition.

Village Tourism in Nepal

Nepal is a predominantly rural society, and its rich culture and ethnic diversity are best experienced in its villages. A growing number of programmes enable visitors to stay overnight in private homes in traditional villages far from the tourist trails.
Village stays (or village tourism, as this relatively new activity is called in the business) offer a unique opportunity for comfortable cultural immersion. The idea is that a tour operator contracts with a whole village to accommodate and entertain guests; rooms in local houses are fitted with bathrooms and a few tourist-style comforts, host families are trained to prepare meals hygienically, and a guide accompanies the guests to interpret. Participating villages tend to be located a couple of hours' walk from the nearest road - close enough to be easily accessible for less-than-fit visitors, yet far enough to be culturally intact and shielded from outside influences. (You'd never find these places on your own.)
Village tourism differs from trekking in a couple of important ways. First, although some walking is involved, and a trekking permit may even be required, exercise is secondary to the cultural experience: the whole point is to stay in one village and get to know its people, not to cover distances between villages. Second, accommodation is in an actual home, not a trekking inn filled with other backpackers, so the cross-cultural exchange is more authentic. And while participating villages obviously do get tourists, they get far fewer than even the most minor halt along a standard teahouse trek, and are completely uncommercialized.
Tourism and its economic benefits are far too concentrated in a few areas of Nepal, so village tourism is seen as a promising way to disperse visitors and spread thewealth. Under the best programmes, local people get to keep 50 percent of the proceeds - that's big money, given the high rates charged by operators - and since all food and services are locally produced, virtually all of the money stays in the community. However, if village tourism catches on, get-rich-quick operators can be expected to dive in with cut-price packages that give locals a much smaller portion of the cut, so if you're considering a village stay, question prospective operators closely about where the money's going.
So if you're an individual orcouple you should contact the companies well in advance and adjust your schedule to coordinate with already-scheduled departures.
A few language institutes and other recoganizations in Kathmandu also organize informal homestays with individual families in and around the valley. Most of these are intended specifically to provide Nepali language immersion, but at least one programme is set up for tourists just wanting to spend a weekend with a Nepali family.

Humla & Jumla Treks

The trek from Simikot, the administrative center of Humla District to the Tibetan border is usually used to reach western Tibet, where Mt. Kailash is the major attraction. Tourism related facilities are relatively undeveloped in this area although several organizations are working to promote community based tourism opportunities between Simikot and the border. The only way to reach Simikot is to fly from Nepalgunj or to trek from Rara Lake – the largest lake in Nepal. The area surrounding the lake is Rara National Park. Schedule flights to Simikot are generally unreliable due to weather conditions but large groups have the option of chartering flight.

The most common way to get to Rara is to take a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla from where it is two to three days trek to the park. An alternative way is to combine a trek to Lower Dolpa and a visit to Rara Naitonal Park. By trekking west from Dolpa it is possible to reach Jumla and the park within a week. The best way to trek here is in group.

A journey into the Jumla region and the beautiful Rara Lake, is probably one of the most rewarding and fascinating treks in all the Himalayan range given its tranquility and the un-spoilt splendor of nature. Rara, situated at an altitude of 2,990 m, is the biggest lake in Nepal. This sparkling lake with brilliantly clear water is surrounded by a spruce and juniper forest and lies within the Rara National Park. The easiest means to reach Rara is to take a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, from where your destination is 2-3 days walk away. Start this refreshing trek in the hilly village of Jumla where apple orchards stretch out over the hills. The trek leads through remote countryside toward the Tibetan border. You then enter the Rara National Park, which is the smallest national park in Nepal. Surrounded by blue pine, black juniper, West Himalayan spruce, oak and Himalayan cypress, Rara Lake is also a popular pilgrimage site for Nepalis. This spectacular scenery and its serenity will bring inner peace to any visitor.

Since few tourists and natives visit the Rara Lake, there are no tourist facilities either along the trekking route or inside the park. So camping is the only option and trekkers must be self-sufficient in all their needs.

Lower Dolpa and Upper Dolpa trekking

Located in the central west of the country the focal point of the area is the Shey Phoksundo National park. This remote and rugged protected area is both scenically and culturally attractive. The Lower Dolpa trek circuit can be completed in eight days from Juphal back to Juphal. The circuit can be completed either clockwise or anticlockwise, depending on preference but in both cases the focal points of the trek are Phoksundo Lake and the Tarap Valley.

In comparison to Lower Dolpa, less number of trekkers enters the heavily restricted upper Dolpa section of Shey Phoksundo National Park. The main attraction of the area is the wild and pristime landscape. Geographically, it is similar to Tibetan Plateau and is generally dry, cold and sparsely vegetated.

The trekking season for both Upper and Lower Dolpa is generally from June to September.

After enjoying our leisure time spent in Kathmandu , we fly to Nepalganj during daylight and in the evening we explore the beautiful city of Nepalganj . Early the next day we depart from our hotel and we fly to Juphal. The 45 minutes flight gives us the panoramic view of the giant Annapurna , the magnificent Dhaulagiri and the beautiful Kanjiroba peak. As we land at the airstrip at Juphal. We are greeted by our trek crew and from this point we commence our trek. While wandering through the terraced fields to the Bheri River we are led to Dunai, a large village and the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region.

We follow the trails of the Suli Gad River listening to its roar and reach Hanke, the gateway to Phoksundo National Park . Leaving Hanke and crossing the trails of the Rinje we continue to follow the river track to reach the National Park office at Sumdo. On the way from Sumdo we ascend to a ridge from where we experience the most staggering view of the waterfall and we have our first glimpses to the Phoksundo Lake , looking beautiful in turquoise blue.

The Western trekking in Nepal

Treks in the west of Nepal are quite different from treks in other parts of the country. The region is less developed and has fewer facilities available for the visitors. This makes trekking here much more of an exploration type and intending trekkers must be prepared for some delays and other hardships. It is also considerably more expensive to trek in the remote parts of the west. Ethnic group of people seen in the northern parts of the area, particularly in Dolpa are of Tibetan origin. Other groups found here are Magar, Gurung and the people of Hindu caste origin. Commonly seen animals are leopard, Himalayan Tahr and Blue Sheep.

Popular trekking areas in this region are Dolpa, Simikot and Lake Rara. The best time to visit is the traditional trekking seasons of spring and autumn. The northern parts are also suitable for summer treks. The region has not been developed to cater to independent trekkers, so all groups must be self sufficient, in all respect.

The Far East trekking in Nepal

The Far East region of Nepal provides unique treks along rarely visited trails. One of the main attractions is the spectacular scenery of rhododendrons in bloom on the hills and ridges along the way. Deer and wild sheep are often spotted in the area and birds are found in abundance. The region is home to ethnic groups of Kirat, notably the Rais and Limbus. The popular trekking areas in this region are Kanchenjunga area, Milke Danda and Jaljale Himal. In general the region has not been develop to cater to independent trekkers so groups must be fully self sufficient.

The starting points for treks in the Far East are at Basantapur, Taplejung and Tumlingtar. Basantapur needs minimum of sixteen tour drive from Kathmandu. There are no tourist bus services so trekkers must either use schedule bus services or arrange private transport. Another option is flying to Tumlingtar or Taplejung from Kathmandu. The flights take approx. 45 to 50 minutes from Kathmandu, and about 20 minutes from Biratnagar to Taplejung.

Gorkha and Manaslu trekking

The areas to the east of the Annapurna are the peaks of Manaslu group. Few visitors trek to this area, which makes a visit here all the more unique and unspoiled. The area is bordered by River Budhi Gandaki and to the west River Marshyangdi. This area is marked by two cultural highlights: Gorkha, which is the ancestral seat of the reigning Shah dynasty and the temple of Manakamana. Since the treks in the Manaslu region originate at around 1000 meters and reach as high as 5200 meters, the trekker will see a wide range of flora typical of the middle hills and alpine regions of Nepal. Plants to be seen around here are pine, rhododendron, wildlife include barking deer, pika and Himalayan marmots. Birds to be sighted in the region are pheasant, raven and chough. People of Tibetan origin inhabit several villages. Other groups found here are Gurung and Tamangs. The best time to trek here is between September and May. A few teahouses are seen in the Manaslu Conservation Area; however, teahouse trekking is not a suggested option. Government regulations require all the group trekking to the Manaslu Circuit to be fully sufficient.

The main hub for treks in Manaslu region is the town of Gorkha, which can be reached from Kathmandu in about 4 hours by bus or car. The alternative starting point is Dhading Besi, from where it can be reached in about five hours.

Trekking in Nepal

The Wikipedia (online encyclopedia) defines "Trekking is a form of walking, undertaken with the specific purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. It usually takes place on trails in areas of relatively unspoiled wilderness."

In the normal term, trekking is another word for walking. However, the word trekking has become well known for the form of walking which takes you along trials winding up, down, over and around mountains. Nepal is trekkers’ paradise. One can trek along with beaten trials or isolated outposts. Trekking itself is not mountaineering although mountaineering expedition too uses some of the popular trials to reach the Base Camps for the rigorous climb.

Asahi Treks is specializing in customer service in the Himalayas Mountains fostering our motto of Hospitality, Friendship and Flexibility with personal care of our valuable guests. We can assure you by changing a simple holiday into adventurous, fascinating and memorable cultural experience to your utmost satisfaction. Normally we offer two different standards of trekking (Moderate to adventurous) in Nepal and they are:

When to trek?

February to April (Spring Season) is the time you can enjoy the view of the majestic mountains with no clouds and this is also the time to enjoy different flora with blooming rhododendrons of vibrant colors. Days are apparently hot while walking but you can feel relief at night. Days are longer so you can cover bit more distance as well. Late September to late November (Autumn Season) is the most popular season as the sky remains clear and rain is at a minimum. It provides uninterrupted and crystal clear views of the Himalayas for several hundreds of kilometers. December and January are the Trekking in Nepalcoldest months with heavy snowfall in the upper hills, crossing the passes at this time can be impossible.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Also known as Altitude Sickness, AMS is the effects of altitude on those who ascend too rapidly to elevations above 3600 m. early symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, lethargy, and sleeplessness. Do not ignore these warnings as serious symptoms can cause death within a few hours. Being young, strong and fit does not help. Medicine is no substitute for descent. If a doctor is available, he may give medicine and oxygen. The patient must go down, even if given treatment. If you are traveling in Khumbu and Manang regions, you can contact Khunde, Pheriche in Khumbu region and Manang in Manang region for more information on altitude sickness. Hospitals are there with good doctors. To avoid altitude sickness you should walk slowly and drink a lot of fluid. If you feel exhausted, you have moved too fast or too high. Take time to acclimatize to each gaining altitude and give yourself rest days. If you start to feel unwell, retreat to a lower altitude immediately. It may save your life. The only cure for AMS is to descend immediately to a lower elevation.

Naya Kaga 5,844 m/climbing

Ganjala Chuli 5,844 m (Naya Kaga) is the one of the beast and adventurous climbing spot in Nepal which includes Langtang-Helambu trek in Nepal.Langtang region is a popular, famous and amazing destination for climbing snow peaks and spectacular panoramic views of mountains in Nepal. It has easy access to the region and availability of several snow peaks scattered around for acclimatization make this region an ideal destination for novice as well as experienced climbers. Naya Kanga is an attractive peak rising to the west of the Ganja La pass (5,844m/16).

Ascending to Ganja La and the summit of Naya Kanga offer the spectacular panoramic views of mountains in Nepal and Tibet including Langshisa Ri (6,370m/20,894ft), Pemthang Ri (6,836m/22,422ft), Shisapangma (8,046m/27,749ft), Langtang Lirung (7,425m/24,354ft), Pemthang Kapro Ri (6,830m/22,402ft) and Langtang II (6,571m/21,553ft). The normal route of ascent to Naya Kanga is via the north - East Ridge over a line on ice and snow. We follow the route of Langtang trek to Kyangjin (3,749m/12,297ft) for the ascent of Naya Kanga. To the north above Kangjin, there are several hills that provide both the magnificent views and acclimatization. Northeast of Kyangjin RI (4,700m/15,416ft), there are two peaks; Yala Peak (5,500m/18,040ft) and Tsergo Peak (5,749m/18,857ft) that provide good climbing for acclimatization. Climbing Naya Kanga from North-East Face and North Ridge.

Crossing the Langtang Khola below Kyangjin, we climb steeply along the ridge through a forest of rhododendron and juniper. Finally climbing more gently, we arrive at yak pastures of Ngegang at about 4000m. We continue following the trail to Ganja La climbing steeply through moraine . We leave Ganja La trail to climb steeply up yet more moraine to reach the eastern end of the glacier shelf beneath the north-east face of Naya Kanga. We set up the high camp here for the ascent. We cross the glacier shelf to the foot of a shallow couloir heading to the north ridge. We climb the couloir to the notch and the base of the ridge. Then we turn to the ice nose on the left which is only the technical section on the climb. Now the ridge widens and leads to a small col. on the east-west summit ridge and the summit is only 30m higher to the right. The climb near the summit should be done carefully. Normally, the ascent takes 5-7 hours from the high camp. For the return trek, we may follow Ganja La-Helambu route or back the way we came in to Dhunche.

Kwangde(6,011m ) Climbing

Kwangde Ri is also named Kongde Ri and Kwande on various maps. This difficult mountain forms an impressive multi-summited ridge on the eastern end of the Lumding Himal, which in turn can be regarded as part of the Rolwaling Himal. Rising south-west of Namche Bazaar above the Bhote Koshi River, the mountain’s northern flank forms an impressive barrier that throws down several steep ridges to the north.
Its glaciated southern flank is more aloof and is hidden at the northern end of the Lumding Drangka, a high and remote valley bound to the west by the tumbling glaciers of Karyolung (6,511m/21,361ft), Khartang (6,853m/22,484ft) and Numbur (6,959m/22,831ft). The Lumding valley is rarely visited by trekkers or expeditors. At the northern end of the valley, the stream cascades down a natural rocky barrier above which there is a moraine-bound lake- the Tsho Og, at the snout of the Limding Glacier. North of the Tsho Og, hidden in a huge rocky cwm- ???, is the massive Lumding Tsho Teng (5,151m/16,899ft).

All the routes climbed to-date on the Kwangde Peaks are difficult and none have proved to be suitable for commercial trekking expeditions. The routes on the North Face are particularly difficult and reflect recent developments in lightweight Himalayan climbing with an emphasis on technical difficulty and a high degree of commitment. They have invariably been made by two climbers without support camps or fixed ropes, although, in at least one case, a subsequent ascent has seen a return to traditional siege style tactics with masses of fixed ropes and camps. The routes on the South Face are also committing and difficult even though the climbing is more traditional in character.
The first ascent of Kwangde Lho was made by a Nepalese expedition in 1975 which was led by Kumar Khagda Bikram Shah. Lhakpa Tenzing. Sonam Gyalzen, Shambhu Tamang and Sonam Hisi reached the actual summit on October 17 via the South Ridge.
Experienced climbers who are looking for rarely climbed and challenging small peaks in the Himalayas will find this peak very attractive. Further information regarding arrangements to climb this peak will be provided on request.

Hiunchuli (6441m.)/climbing

This is the one of the popular peack . which is nearby the Annapurna south,is the fourth highest peak among the ‘trekking Peaks’ and considered one of the least difficult by expeditions. It was first summited in October 1971 by an American Peace Corps Expedition under the leadership of Craig Anderson.

Hiunchuli is part of the Annapurna range and was discovered by Jimmy Roberts, the father of commercial trekking. It is connected to the east face of Annapurna South. There are three major trekking peaks within the Annapurna Sanctuary, so named by Roberts, as the local inhabitants held the area sacred. They are Tent Peak, Fluted Peak and Hiunchuli.

This trip sets out from Pokhara valley. From Pokhara valley, the trail leads up slowly towards Annapurna Basecamp situated at an altitude of 4300m. One day rest will be set to explore the Annapurna Basecamp and for the acclimatization. Annapurna Basecamp is considered as the Hiunchuli Basecamp too. Three to four days are set aside for the ascent of this peak and then you will return ahead to Pokhara valley followed by same route as in the ‘Annapurna Sanctuary’ trek.

To attempt the mountain you will need some mountaineering skill and is relatively easy to get the climbing permission. The formidable front wall of the sanctuary has a fearsome reputation and there is no 'standard' route up. Any route is a challenging technical climb with devilish route finding, and is best tackled in true expedition style.

Chulu East (6584)/Climbing

We are proud to let you know these little peaks in Nepal. There are thausands of peakes like this but these are under the shadow .These peaks are part of the Manang Himal, which are quite rightly included in the larger Damodar Himal, the eastern limit of which runs south from Chako and Peak 6687 in a north-to-south direction along the Hunlung Khola, Nar Khola and Phu Khola. The south it is bounded by the Marsyangdi River and the Mesokanta La. To the west its limit is the Kali Gandaki and to the north the Parchekya La (5,447m).

There exists considerable confusion with regard to the name and location of the Chulu peaks and what summit actually constitutes Chulu West and Chulu East, since it is soon becomes apparent to anyone that has climbed in the range that several other summits close by, which are actually part of the Chulu massif, are not indicated on present maps of the area. For the sake of clarification, four summits can be included in the Chulu group, two of which are possible on the permit for Chulu West and two on the Chulu East permit. What is apparent is that the available trekking map is highly misleading.

Many climbers are confused as to the exact location of these two peaks as the range has 4 or more summits in the immediate vicinity, which are unmarked in maps of this area. As a result many climbing parties have mistakenly climbed one of these peaks thinking it to be Chulu East or West. It usually understood that with the permit to climb the East or West peak an attempt could be made to the nearby peak as well. A climb of one or both of these peaks combined with Nepal's most famous Around the Annapurna region trek make up for one of the most spectacular Himalayan trekking and climbing.

Our objective is not just about summating a Himalayan peak, although this is a major accomplishment in itself. We specialize in teaching you the necessary skills to become a competent expedition member. Nepal’s unique environment and consistent conditions provide the perfect classroom for our high altitude Himalayan School. A solid ratio of instructors to students guarantees you the personal attention required for a successful summit attempt.

Pumori ( 7161m.)/climbing

To the Northwest of Nepal lies the fascinating country of the legendry Sherpas. In this land of mountains, Pumori stands aloof and proud as if aware of its intense effect on the valley below. From the smaller summit belonging to Kalapattar to the sparking slopes of Pumori there appears to be a path that leads to the very sky. Pumori, this incredible pyramid of snow and rocks, is indeed the pride of the Solo Khumbu.
Pumori is generally considered to be technically challenging and requires climbers to be experienced as well as in faultless physical condition. For one such climber this mountain could become the most rewarding challenger in the Himalaya.
Our trek kicks off at Lukla. For the actual climb we will use the classical route which was first opened by a German -Swiss team. We climb the enormous south-east slope till the junction with the north-east ridge. This route requires the least amount of technically: but is exposed to objective dangers: an avalanche prone section and a section exposed to seracfall. The Base Camp is at an altitude of 3500m while the advanced camp is established at an altitude of 5900m.
No high altitude experience necessary. It is mostly a snow climb up fixed lines that we will all take part in fixing. Some snow/ice climbing ability really helps here. You will need crampons and an ice axe for some of the snow/ice and mixed stretches, so experience with use of these is mandatory. Of course you will need to be in an above average shape and a positive mental attitude is as important as good physical condition.
MT. PUMORI ROUTE INFORMATION:

Kanchanjunga 8,586m. Expedition

Kanchanjunga, at 8,586m, is the third-highest peak in the world and the second-highest in Nepal. It was first climbed by a British team in 1956. The peak consists of four summits. The west summit, Yalung Kang, is 8420m high and some people classify it as a separate 8000m. peak.
Thee first Westerner to explore Kanchanjunga was the British botanist JD Hooker, who visited the area twice in 1848 and 1849. Exploration of the Sikkim, side of the peak continued with both British and pundit explorers mapping and photographing until 1899. In that year a party led by Douglas fresh field made a circuit of Kanchanjunga and produced what is still one of the most authoritative maps of the region.
Exploration continued, mostly from the Sikkim side, with expeditions starting from Darjeeling in British India. One of the major contributors to Western knowledge about the region was Dr AM Kellas, who later died in Tibet during the approach march of the 1921 Everest expedition. German expeditions attacked the peak in 1929, 1930 and again in 1931, but none was successful. After the was Sikkim was closed but Nepal was open. In 1955 a team led by Dr Charl es Evans approached the peak via the Yalung Glacier. Two teams climbed the peak, stopping just short of the summit to conform to an agreement with the Maharaja of Sikkim that the summit would remain inviolate.
The Japanese then took up the challenge and mounted expeditions in 1967, 1973 and n1974. when they climbed Yalung Kang. A German Expedition climbed Yalung Kang in 1975, and in Indian army team mounted the second successful expeditions to the main peak of Kanchanjunga.

Mount Cho Oyu/climbing

Austrian first climbs Cho Oyu in 1954. The Indian and German team also climbed this peak in 1958 and 1964 respectively. Till to date many expedition teams have successfully reached on its summit. The year 2004 was regarded as the Golden jubilee of this Cho Oyu Mountain in the field of expedition. The golden jubilee ceremony was organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association with grand fanfare and jubilantly. There were about 400 climbers from different region of the World during this golden jubilee ceremony and most of them made the summit.
Most of the Cho Oyu expedition teams climb from Tibet side due the easy technique-climbing route. Since 1998, our company “Nature Trail Trekking and Expedition" is also conducting the expedition from Tibet side. We also had Golden jubilee Cho Oyu Expedition in Autumn 2004.Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in the world, located a short distance to the west from Everest (the highest) and Lhotse (the fourth highest) in the Khumbu region of Eastern Nepal along the Tibetan border. Its towering peak stands with Everest well above the surrounding mountains. It became a familiar landmark to climbers ascending Everest's north face. Just west of Cho Oyu is the Nangpa La, a 19,000-foot glacier pass, the main trade route between the Khumbu Sherpas and Tibet. Cho Oyu's proximity to the Nangpa La has earned it the distinction among some climbers as being the easiest 8,000 meter peak. It was the third such peak climbed, and the first climbed in Autumn.
